Elements of RM – Project Management Part 2

More on Project Management in the Elements of RM series:

Lessons learned – in AtTask’s blog about all things Project Management, Ty Kiisel writes about creating a process for learning from past mistakes in Project Management and the Definition of Insanity.  In the blog he talks about taking the time to learn from the experience of the last project and how we can change going forward to improve.  Not the most popular use of time but better than being insane!

Right Information to the Right People – in PMI’s Voices on Project Management, Lynda Bourne shares about communicating project information with management – “Executives don’t have time to read fantastically accurate and detailed reports—people are simply too busy to take that kind of deep dive.”  She continues with at least some details need to be communicated and shares three different tips to help Execs get what they need to be successful.  (Credit to AtTask’s Ty Kiisel for directing me to Lynda’s blog and Peter Taylor’s book The Lazy Project Manager for the genesis of the idea.)

Running Projects Across Time Zones – Inside a general advice blog on Advice Blog at are Keys to overseeing projects with team members scattered across the world.  Below are the thoughts covered:

  • Because communication is the major issue using a collaborative (easily available to all) Project Management tool is key.  Some SaaS examples are AtTask, Daptiv, Basecamp, LiquidPlanner, Zoho Projects and Intuit’s QuickBase.
  • Documentation that backs up the communication – Meeting Agendas, Meeting notes, Project details – has to be kept up-to-date.
  • Rotating meeting times (maybe 3 different times as you don’t want to be totally random) so everyone shares in the pain of off-hour gatherings.
  • When possible, a face-to-face meeting to establish a “real” relationship from time to time as this goes far in making remote meetings work better.
  • Be quick to reply to inquiries to lessen the impact of time zones.
