Adding RM to Operations Manager role

Although I would love to work in a “perfect” Release Management role, perfection is seldom found so I think it is important to be flexible in a position.  As I speak to people and review various job postings I often see pieces of that I think RM should be, mainly because RM is fairly new on the seen.

Convincing an organization to allow you to fill-in the missing pieces of RM into your role can be challenging but rewarding at the same time.  For example, some companies adopt the change coordination part of RM but not the Gatekeeper role that “holds the keys” to production systems and takes responsibility for their implementations.  Sound that organization change to fit the perfect RM model or should it adapt like a Coach trying to get the best out of his/her players?

One way to adapt is to add what is missing to another role.  In the case of the missing Gatekeeper role, it could make sense for the Operations Manager (person in charge of Web site) to take on that responsibility.  After all they would be motivated because it is their day to day work that needs the protecting.  If no where else then why not at the end of the line (i.e. the Operations Manager being the last person who could protect the customer from needless change).  More work for that role but it would lead to better results I am sure.
