Release Manager in the middle

Release Manager in the middle

Sometimes I wonder why the role of Release Manager started. Why add a layer of Management in between the Development group and those not in the Development group?

Easy answer – Developers have better things to do that worry about communication details.

The act of verbal or email communication and act of detailed documentation isn’t typically in the job description of your average Developer. They also do typically spend time considering what someone might need in order to understand what their change does in Production. They probably want to spend time on creating new stuff and learning about new technology. I’ll be the first to admit that I want the Developers & Testers to spend time on creating and fixing.

Enter the Release Manager as the middle-person.

Add a Release Manager in the middle of the communication process between Development and Deployment Engineers and/or the Business owners and you will have happy internal customers. There is more to RM than communication but the communication process is a big  part if it.
