Update or Upgrade?

Is that change an Update or an Upgrade?

Today I took some time to decide if I should be using the term “Update” or the term “Upgrade” for my typical changes to Production. I’ve used the terms interchangeably in the past but decided enough was enough – it is finally time to get it right.

What I found is that for the change I’m doing this week (bug fixes, no new functionality), I should refer to it as an “Update.” If I’m adding major changes then “Upgrade” is much better. If just a few feature changes it is less clear and will probably go with “Upgrade” to make it easy.
